WESTPORT, Conn. – Henry Wynne won two events to lead Staples’ boys track team to its first league indoor championship in five years Thursday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Staples’ girls finished fourth and won two events.
Wynne, a junior, won the 1,000 and 1,600. He also took second in the 3,200 as Staples compiled 107 points. Danbury finished second with 70, and Greenwich was third with 52.
Staples’ other individual winner was Dean Hefnawy, who won the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet, 6 inches. The Wreckers’ pole vaulters dominated the competition, taking four of the top six places. Matt Mula (second), Doug Caffery (fifth) and Aide McConnell (sixth) were the other Staples jumpers.
Staples also won the 4 x 400 relay with Jon Heil, Hefnawy, Max Hoberman and Walker Marsh. Heil was second in the 55 and fifth in the 300. Staples was also second in the 4 x 800 relay.
The girls were led by pole vaulter Lexie Schachne, who won with a jump of 11 feet, 3 inches. The 4 x 800 team also won with Courtney Mullen, Siobhan O’Loughlin, Caroline Smith and Alexandra Popkin.
The 4 x 400 relay with Tyler Scanlin, Mullen, Emily Troelstra and Popkin finished second, and Caroline Koenig took third in the 3,200. Staples finished with 43 points, just behind Danbury (49). Greenwich won with 92, and Darien took second with 74.
Wynne’s time of 2:31.66 in the 1,000 was close to taking down a long-time school record. Tom Sheeran’s mark of 2:29.8 has stood since 1989. Wynne was also second in the 3,200 in a grueling night of competition for the junior.
